State-based resources for brain health, caregiving and support

The Balm in Gilead partners with Black churches to deliver dementia awareness campaigns and caregiver education across congregations. The non-profit group is based in Virginia

The University of Virginia Health's program offers diagnosis, education, and referral to caregiver supports for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

The UVA Card Lab researches challenges faced by caregivers of people with dementia. It can help caregivers find clinical trials and also offers a variety of caregiving resources and toolkits specific to dementia, changes, and helpful organizations.

INOVA provides comprehensive memory evaluation, caregiver education, and support group connections for families in Northern Virginia. Its nurse navigators can assist with appointments, coordinate test results, answer questions, provide support and community resources.

The Fairfax AAA offers caregiver support, respite navigation, and dementia resources tailored to older adults in Fairfax County. If you're not sure where to start, it recommends calling 703–324–7948.

The Span Center provides caregiver programs, memory cafés, and case management services in the Richmond region. You may also find meal, transportation, volunteer, and Medicare counseling services in your area.

VCU puts Alzheimer's and dementia care in its Parkinson's center. Here, you'll find caregiver resources, memory clinics and adult day centers, support for financial assistance and medical equipment, and local aging resources.

The Prince William County AAA offers a number of support for people with dementia and their caregivers. This specific page looks at support groups and in-person meetings. Partners include First Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a majority-Black congregation, which hosts Alzheimer’s caregiver support groups and care.

Café Latino is a Spanish-language support group that offers caregiver education and emotional support in Spanish for families in Northern Virginia.

Virginia Navigator is a non-profit guide to aging, disability, and veteran services in Virginia. You can search for education, medical, financial, and other assistance or contact the group directly for help getting started.

Dementia Capable Virginia is a DARS program that provides a comprehensive list of state services and the roadmap for dementia care in Virginia. It focuses on educational tools, like explanations of long-term planning.

DACL operates the Alzheimer’s Disease Supportive Services Program in DC, linking residents and caregivers to culturally competent home- and community-based supports, dementia navigation, and training for service providers.

The DC ADRC serves as a “no wrong door” entry point for older adults and persons with disabilities to access eldercare services, options counseling, and dementia-support referrals. You can also find support for benefits counseling, in-home care, and the DC Caregivers Institute.

This chapter delivers education, support groups, care navigation, and 24/7 Helpline services across the District, Maryland, and Virginia regions.

HU-MGC supports aging and community organizations through outreach, training, consultation, and programming, with a focus on equity and African American communities. It has a specific program on ethics and Alzheimer's, as well as broader support for brain health.

Iona’s Dementia Navigators pair social work clinicians with memory loss–affected individuals and caregivers, providing personalized care plans, education, and linkage to supports in DC.

This clinical service offers specialty geriatrics care including for memory, dementia, and complex age-related conditions in the District. It can also help seniors get services from local specialty centers including the Hayes Ward 6 Senior Wellness Center, or find local clinical trials.

This senior wellness hub provides resources to contact centers that provide health education, respite support, and dementia-friendly activities for residents in Wards across D.C.

Hayes SWC is a DC activity center with social, recreational, and educational programs for adults ages 60+ and their caregivers. Partnering with Howard University, it also supports memory screenings and care connections.

Mary's Center runs the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center and offers wellness and social support programs to older adults, including those affected by memory loss, in Ward 1 and surrounding neighborhoods.

ERFSC provides seniors with case management, caregiver support, and aging services in D.C.'s historic communities. The group says it can help residents outside of the Wards it serves also find resources if they call the group.
